Asphalt becomes more durable over time as the bitumen component oxidises. Your asphalt will remain pliable for a period of 12-18 months during this process. Even after the asphalt has cured, do not expect it to be as hard as concrete.

 

It is highly recommended that you take extra care with your new driveway as per the following advice:

 

•  Once your new asphalt has been laid, you will need to keep vehicle traffic off the asphalt for at least 24 hours, even longer in hotter temperatures or as suggested by your contractor.

 

• Your new asphalt will soften as temperatures rise throughout the day. Watering your driveway with a hose will help cure and harden your asphalt. However, never use a water blaster to clean the surface within the first couple of years.

 

• Avoid making tight or stationery turns with power steering, particularly in hot weather as this can cause “scarring”. This will subside as the asphalt cures.

 

• Support the edges of your asphalt as this area is the most vulnerable to cracking or breaking. It is beneficial to backfill up to the level of your edging with topsoil or similar to support the edge. This will also enhance the appearance.

 

• Avoid any oil, petrol or diesel spills as they will react and possibly dissolve the bitumen in the asphalt.

 

• Avoid placing sharp or heavy objects on the surface as they may sink into the surface causing an indentation (Such as a motorbike stand).
